Welsh Tycoon Wants To Turn Neverland Into Amusement Park

(16-3-2008) A Welsh businessman is planning to put in a £25m bid to buy Michael Jackson’s Neverland estate.

Young millionaire James Norvill (27) wants to turn the 2,500-acre home into a theme park to rival those owned by Disney.

James, last year’s Western Mail Young Business Achiever of the Year, says he has contacted a group of business partners about raising the £25m, as well as the £2m-a-year upkeep needed to buy the giant ranch.

The Newport-based waste recycler and property developer says Neverland, which contains a private fairground and a zoo, would be another profitable asset to his growing business empire. James, who took over his dad’s drains company while in his early 20s, said:

“Having visited theme parks all my life I have always been a thrill-seeker.

Having read about the possible sale of Neverland, I have been in touch with a few business partners about a potential buyout.

I have always been someone who thinks outside the box. If I was to successfully purchase the Neverland ranch I would create thrills that would surpass the Disneys of this world.

My ambition would be to create the world’s greatest theme park.

We are looking to put a Welsh consortium together worth around £25m and then appoint an American team to run it.

For somewhere that has never been open to the public, this has real brand value and we want to capitalise on it. I have the contacts to make this work and I am determined to do it.”

James has previously hit the headlines for a host of colourful, publicity-raising stunts. He once drove across the Sahara in a jeep, and is also known for his Skipcar – a vehicle spliced from a 140mph Subaru Impreza and a skip - which is claimed to have set the first ever landspeed record for a skip.

Michael Jackson has been hit with a breach-of-contract lawsuit by John Landis,who has not been paid his share of profits from the “Thriller” video in the last four years. The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last week.

This lawsuit comes just ahead of the news that “Thriller” will be coming to Broadway. Producer James Nederlander said he acquired the rights to do so on Monday.It is unknown if this lawsuit also covers the “Thriller stage show, which has played around Europe. John Landis and his company Levitsky Productions filed a complaint in the western district of Los Angeles Superior Court last Wednesday. Landis is accusing Michael Jackson of “fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct" – essentially, failing to provide any accounting of the “Thriller” profits for the past four years "and earlier", and failing to pay Landis his 50 per cent cut of the net proceeds.” A contract signed at the time states clearly that Jackson and his company, Optimum Productions, would pay Landis 50 per cent of net profits from both the video and the documentary, and also provide regular financial statements on revenues – quarterly in the first instance, and then yearly from 1986 on.

Landis's attorney, Miles Feldman of Liner Yankelevitz Sunshine & Regenstreif, said it was the closest thing he could imagine to an open and shut case. "I can't understand what they are doing to John Landis' company. It is such a straight ahead thing," Feldman said. "It makes no sense at all to me."

The contract includes rights to dramatic and musical works, but the extent to which any show is based on the video, as opposed to Jackson's music, may be open to interpretation -- or negotiation.

The Landis suit probably does not involve a huge amount of money – the complaint does not assert a dollar figure, but the debt is not believed to be more than about $1 million, even taking into account last year's successful 25th anniversary re-issue of the Thriller album and the new-found popularity of the video on YouTube. It does, however, raise some singularly troubling questions about the way his affairs are being handled.

Neither Feldman nor the lawyer listed by the state of California as the last known agent for Optimum Productions, Zia Modabber of Century City, said they had any clue who was now providing legal representation for the superstar. Optimum Productions suspended its operations an unknown number of years ago – possibly as far back as the 1990s. According to the complaint, it "failed to observe corporate formalities" including basic record-keeping; Jackson was the sole shareholder and "commingled his funds with those of Optimum".

Open your mind and your heart, Last night I went to see a screening of Shortbus; John Cameron Mitchell's follow-up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch and it was the most joyful movie experience I've had in ages. There is something audacious and exciting going on here... something that maybe hasn't been seen in American film since the 60's. Shortbus is laugh-out-loud funny and sink-in-your-seat to hide your tears sad. There's a message of 'acceptance' and 'we're all in this together' to be received... you just have to want to hear it (and that, in itself, will present a problem to a fair number of moviegoers who are just unable to let it in.) The explicit sex isn't just a gimmick... it really feels like it comes from an honest place with these characters. It's playful when it needs to be, angry at other times, sometimes it's tentative and unsure. Just like how it is in real life (as opposed to porn) which is why it works so well. [/code]

The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress is a 1944 documentary film which ostensibly provides an account of the final mission of the Memphis Belle, a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber whose aircrew was the first in the U.S. Eighth Air Force to complete 25 missions as a crew over Germany and German-occupied Europe.

The dramatic 16 mm color film of actual battles was made by cinematographer First Lieutenant Harold J. Tannenbaum. The film was directed by Major William Wyler, narrated by Eugene Kern, and had scenes at its Bassingbourn base photographed by Hollywood cinematographer Captain William H. Clothier. It was made under the auspices of the First Motion Picture Unit, a branch of the United States Army Air Forces (to which future US President Ronald Reagan also belonged). The film actually depicted the next to last mission of the crew (see below) on May 15, 1943, and was made as a morale-building inspiration for the Home Front by showing the everyday courage of the men who manned these planes.

The crew on the mission filmed included:

* Captain Robert K. Morgan (pilot)
* Captain James A. Verinis (co-pilot)
* Captain Vincent B. Evans (bombardier)
* Captain Charles B. Leighton (navigator)
* Technical Sergeant Robert J. Hanson (radio operator)
* Technical Sergeant Harold P. Loch (engineer and top turret gunner)
* Staff Sergeant Casimer A. Nastal (waist gunner)
* Staff Sergeant Clarence E. Winchell (waist gunner)
* Staff Sergeant Cecil H. Scott (ball turret gunner)
* Staff Sergeant John P. Quinlan (tail gunner)

Morgan's crew had not flown all of its missions together. Captain Verinis had originally been Morgan's co-pilot at the beginning of their combat tour but had become a "first pilot" (aircraft commander) in his own right on December 30, 1942, after which he flew 19 missions as commander of a replacement B-17 he named Connecticut Yankee after his home state. Nor was Morgan's crew the one originally selected by Wyler for filming. He had been following Captain Oscar O'Neill (whose plane was named Invasion 2nd) of the 401st Bomb Squadron until O'Neill's B-17 and five others were shot down over Bremen, Germany, on April 17, 1943. Morgan was then selected and his crew re-united by the Eighth Air Force to complete its tour together and to return to the United States for a war bond drive.
